Cattle obstructing toll road
Cattle obstructing toll road
From Kompas
Large numbers of cattle, goats, and sheep crossing the Jakarta-Serang toll road at some points, has become a familiar sight. It cannot be avoided since there are open ricefields on both sides of the road and farmers have not stopped the tradition of grazing loose cattle in these fields. It would not be a problem if the cattle would stay on the roadside. The trouble, however, is that these cattle are fast becoming a road hazard.
On Jan. 31, I was on the toll road from Cilegon to Jakarta, when all of a sudden a sheep ran across the road. The incident startled me and I immediately slowed down while I veered slightly to the left. The move was a near fatal one because a container truck right behind me, almost hit me.
Fortunately, it was rather quiet on the road so no fatal accident happened. The frequent sight of dead goats and sheep on this road is proof that such accidents happen regularly.
I hope the toll road project management will repair the fence between the toll lanes in the vicinity of the ricefields around East Serang. This would prevent loose cattle from straying into the toll lanes.
