Car salesman tried for fraud

JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court tried an employee of a car company yesterday for swindling more than Rp 450 million from customers.

Prosecutor Roostiningsih told the court that Ferry Triputra Tisna, 27, a marketing supervisor of PT Astrindo Jaya Mobilindo on Jl. Fatmawati, South Jakarta had cheated eight people who bought a total of 12 cars from the company.

Ferry pawned the ownership documents (BPKB) of cars sold between August 1994 and May 1995, instead of giving them to the car buyers, the prosecutor said.

In August 1994, the defendant cheated Liu Neu Cie who bought a Toyota Kijang for Rp 36.5 million cash.

The defendant reported to his boss that Liu bought the vehicle on credit. He turned in part of the Rp 36.5 million of the cash he received and stole the remainder.

The defendant did not give the ownership documents belonging to the car to Liu Neu Cie, saying that he needed two months to register them, the prosecutor said.

After two months the defendant did not fulfill his promise to turn over the documents. He said that the arrangements has not yet been completed, Roostiningsih said.

"The defendant pawned the ownership document of the car to PT Astra Sedaya Finance.

In December 1994, the defendant cheated Lianto Tedja with the same modus operandi. Tedja bought two Toyota Corollas and a Toyota Kijang with a total price of Rp 250 million.

In March 1995, Ferry cheated Dewi Sartika, Sonny Wijaya and Agus Yanto in the same way. Dewi bought a Toyota Starlet from Ferry, while Sonny and Agus each bought a Toyota Kijang. The three customers lost Rp 115 million.

The defendant also cheated two other buyers, Ridwan Hanandi and Kania. Ridwan bought a Daihatsu Delta truck and Kania bought five Toyota Kijang vans.
