Car Sales Suddenly Surge, 80,776 Units Sold in April
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - National car sales are beginning to show signs of recovery after a sluggish period during Eid al-Fitr. The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) recorded vehicle distribution from factories to dealers, or wholesales, at 80,776 units in April 2026. This figure surged by 55% compared to the same period last year, which was only 52,108 units.
The surge also reversed the conditions in March, when the automotive market was hit by the extended Eid al-Fitr holiday period. In March, car sales dropped 13.8% compared to the previous month due to slowed consumer purchasing activity and vehicle distribution.
On a monthly basis, April wholesales grew 31.8% compared to March 2026, which was at 61,271 units.
Meanwhile, retail sales or distribution from dealers to consumers also improved to 75,730 units, up 13.7% from the previous month’s 66,595 units.
Not only compared to the previous month, retail sales also recorded strong annual growth. April 2026 retail sales rose 30.2% compared to April last year.
This has boosted national car sales for January-April 2026. In the first four months of this year, total wholesales reached 289,787 units, or grew 12.5% compared to the same period last year at 257,647 units.
From the retail sales side, cumulative sales reached 287,581 units, up 6.9% from the January-April 2025 achievement of 268,940 units.
Gaikindo itself targets national car sales for the whole of 2026 to reach 850,000 units. This target is up around 5.8% from the 2025 full-year sales realisation of 803,687 units.
