Cannes 2026 Bans Revealing Outfits and Sneakers on the Red Carpet
The Cannes Film Festival 2026 is once again in the spotlight, not only for its lineup of films and international celebrities but also for its strict dress code on the red carpet.
As reported by People (13/5/2026), this year’s Cannes Film Festival has reintroduced several specific fashion rules, including a ban on overly revealing or ‘naked dressing,’ which had become popular at various red carpet events.
The rule applies specifically to evening film screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, the main location for gala screenings during the festival in Cannes, France.
The regulation is outlined in the official FAQ section of the Cannes Film Festival website.
“For reasons of decorum, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet and throughout the festival area,” stated the Cannes Film Festival in its official rules.
The policy was initially implemented last year.
According to People’s report, festival officials previously explained that the rule was created to reinforce existing regulations while also aligning with French law.
In addition to revealing clothing, the festival also prohibits oversized garments or long gowns that could obstruct traffic flow and seating arrangements within the theatre.
However, sneakers remain prohibited in the main screening area of the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The festival also bans large bags and backpacks from entering the gala film screening areas.
The Cannes Film Festival has stated that guests who do not comply with the dress code may be denied access to the red carpet.
“The reception team will be responsible for denying access to the red carpet to anyone who does not comply with these rules,” said a festival statement.
Despite its reputation for glamour and luxury, the Cannes Film Festival is known for having stricter fashion rules compared to many other international entertainment events.
This year, the rules have once again drawn public attention as trends in revealing and experimental fashion continue to dominate red carpets around the world.
