Canadian Prime Minister urges the United States and Israel to respect international norms of engagement
Ottawa – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, 3 March, expressed regret over the failure of the international order in the Middle East, while urging all parties, including the United States and Israel, to respect international rules of engagement. ‘Canada calls for a rapid de-escalation of the fighting and stands ready to help realise that objective,’ Carney told reporters in Sydney during his visit to Australia, according to a statement released on Tuesday. He said that despite United Nations Security Council resolutions and various efforts by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over decades, Iran’s nuclear threat continues to loom. However, he argued that the United States and Israel had acted without involving the UN or consulting with allies, including Canada. ‘Canada reiterates that international law binds all parties involved in the conflict,’ Carney said. He stated that resolving the crisis requires commitment to a broader political solution, and that diplomatic engagement is important to avoid a wider and deeper conflict.
