Origins of Tasyrik Day
Tasyrik Day is the three days after Eid al-Adha (10 Zulhijah), namely 11, 12, and 13 Zulhijah. These three days are special in Islam because during these times Muslims are allowed to slaughter their sacrificial animals.
Quoting the official MUI site, Tasyrik or tasyriq in Arabic is the masdar form of “syarraqa” which means “sunrise or to dry something”. Tasyrik is also interpreted as facing east (the direction of sunlight).
The prohibition of fasting on Tasyrik Days is because the time is highly encouraged to enjoy various dishes and preparations from the meat of the sacrificial animal. In hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported as saying the following about this prohibition:
From Ibn Umar radhiyallahu anhuma, they said: “It is not permitted to fast on the Days of Tasyrik except for the one who does not have a sacrificial animal when performing Hajj.” (HR. Bukhari, no. 1859)
Tasyrik Day is also called a day for eating and drinking. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Day of Arafah, the Day of Eid al-Adha, and the Tasyrik Days are our Eid for Muslims, and they are days for eating and drinking.” (HR. An-Nasa’i, no. 2954)
