Calls to Investigate Andrie Yunus Case Echo Amid 902nd Kamisan Action
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The 902nd Kamisan action was held in front of the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (2/4/2026).
This time, the protest was marked by strong demands from a coalition of civil society groups for the government to thoroughly investigate the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus.
Participants carried posters reading, “From arsenic to acid, we continue to fight,” accompanied by images of human rights activist Munir and Andrie Yunus. The action proceeded peacefully under police supervision.
A statement was read by criminology academic from the University of Indonesia, Mamik Sri Supatmi.
Mamik emphasised that the state must immediately form an independent Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) involving civil society and free from conflicts of interest.
“The state must immediately form an independent Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) involving civil society, free from conflicts of interest,” said Mamik.
The coalition also demanded that all perpetrators be tried through public courts under the framework of premeditated attempted murder, not merely assault.
Additionally, they requested guarantees of protection and recovery for the victim, the victim’s family, and witnesses, to ensure the investigation proceeds without threats or intimidation.
They also urged an independent investigation by Komnas HAM, and requested the Attorney General to form an ad hoc investigation team to follow up on allegations of gross human rights violations.
The demand for the case to be handled through public courts became a key focus. Mamik assessed that handing the case to military mechanisms could create conflicts of interest.
“Allowing the investigation to be entirely in the hands of the military means allowing an institution whose members are suspected of involvement to investigate itself,” said Mamik.
However, she noted, the case involving Andrie Yunus is a general criminal offence occurring in public space with a civilian victim.
This case must be constructed as premeditated attempted murder with aggravating circumstances under Article 459 jo. Article 17 jo. Article 20 of the Criminal Code, not serious assault,” said Mamik.
“The police have no legal basis or obligation to hand over or transfer the case file to the military. None,” stressed Usman.
He added that the case file should be handed over to the Public Prosecutor, not to the military, so the case can be tried in public court.
Additionally, Andrie Yunus has the right to refuse examination under military court mechanisms.
