Calls for Closure of Yogyakarta Daycare Accused of Child Abuse
JAKARTA - A member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives, Arzeti Bilbina, has urged the closure of operations for a daycare or child care centre in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) that is suspected of committing violence against children.
She strongly condemned the child abuse case carried out by the daycare located in the Umbulharjo area of DIY.
“We strongly condemn the violent treatment at the Yogyakarta daycare. This is an inhumane act and a crime that cannot be tolerated at all. The perpetrators must be given firm sanctions, including the revocation of the operational permit for that place so that there are no more victims in the future,” Arzeti stated in her remarks on Sunday (26/4/2026).
She called on the police to thoroughly investigate the child abuse case in a transparent and uncompromising manner.
In addition, she encouraged support for the child victims and their parents.
This is because violence against children has the potential to leave trauma that will disrupt their growth and development.
“Intensive support from professionals, such as psychologists or child counsellors, is absolutely necessary so that the trauma experienced can be healed. The role of parents is also crucial in restoring the child’s sense of security after experiencing this tragic incident,” Arzeti said.
She emphasised that every form of violence against children is a serious violation of human rights.
“Every form of violence against children is a serious violation of human rights and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The state must be present to ensure that victims are protected and perpetrators are processed according to the law,” said Arzeti in a written statement on Sunday (26/4/2026).
The government fully supports the steps taken by law enforcement authorities in handling the case professionally and justly.
“This case serves as an important reminder for all of us to strengthen the oversight system for child care institutions. We will continue to monitor the handling process while ensuring that victim recovery proceeds optimally,” Arzeti stated.
Previously, as many as 53 children were suspected of experiencing physical violence and inhumane treatment at Little Aresha Daycare in Umbulharjo, Yogyakarta City.
Police have named 13 people as suspects and immediately detained them. The naming of suspects was carried out after the Yogyakarta Police Resort held a case assembly on Saturday night (25/4/2026), following a raid on the incident location.
“What is certain is that 13 people have been named as suspects, from the school principal, the foundation chair, to the caregivers at the location. It could develop further, depending on the development process and additional statements from the suspects,” said Ihsan on Sunday (26/4/2026).
