Call to Arms on Corruption

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday (31/1/07) called on Indonesians to join the fight against rampant corruption.

"I call on all the people of Indonesia not to be dizzied and not to be pessimistic about efforts to eradicate corruption," Dr. Yudhoyono said in his annual New Year speech.
He said the battle against corruption, which had eaten into the country's wealth and scuttled the achievements of state budgets, should be "implemented earnestly."

"Let us turn a new leaf in our nation's life, by not being tempted and return to practicing KKN," the president said, using an Indonesian acronym for corruption, collusion and nepotism.

In his speech enumerating Indonesia's achievements last year, Dr. Yudhoyono gave a post box number to which people could send reports to him about government officials who obstructed or hindered investment and business or were corrupt.

Dr. Yudhoyono said corruption and bureaucratic inefficiency were among several key factors that discouraged foreign investors.

In another part of his review, Dr. Yudhoyono estimated the economy grew by about 5.6% in 2006, the same as the previous year and back to levels before the Asian financial crisis a decade ago.

"Economic growth in 2005 and in 2006 has approached the pre-crisis rate of 5.6% annually,” the president said. “We are working hard so as to boost growth to 6% or more in 2007 and years to come.”
