Cabinet Secretary Teddy: No Final Decision Yet on Ministers' Salary Cuts
The government is committed to not raising subsidised fuel prices during 2026. Amid rising global economic uncertainties, the government is weighing budget efficiency steps. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya assured that no official decision has yet been made regarding plans to cut salaries for ministers in the Merah Putih Cabinet.
Teddy revealed that the government will soon hold a coordination meeting in the coming days to discuss the concept in depth, including implementation mechanisms if the policy is adopted.
“So the main point is that these concepts will be deliberated in meetings over the next few days. We’ll see then; there is no decision yet,” Teddy stated at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (7/4).
Furthermore, Teddy suggested confirming technical details on the issue directly with the relevant ministers handling budget matters.
On the other hand, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa signalled more aggressive steps in saving the state budget. Purbaya plans to set a direct percentage cut for ministry and agency spending to maintain APBN resilience against the impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
This step follows assessments that requests for ministries to conduct self-efficiency were ineffective.
“I initially asked the ministries to cut themselves, but when told to do so, they didn’t want to cut; instead, they increased everything. If possible, I’ll determine it; I’ll cut by what percentage, then they adjust accordingly,” Purbaya emphasised at the Presidential Palace Complex some time ago.
The Ministry of Finance is currently reviewing various spending components deemed postponable. Efficiency efforts will target programmes considered to have no significant impact or slow acceleration on national economic growth.
Through these measures, the government hopes to allocate the budget more appropriately amid uncertain global conditions.
