JAKARTA — The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) are set to discuss allegations of extortion involving demands for project shares from investors, reportedly carried out by certain Kadin Cilegon officials.

The meeting between the two parties was scheduled to take place at the BKPM Building in South Jakarta on Wednesday (14/5/2025). The project in question is the construction of a chlor-alkali ethylene dichloride (CA-EDC) chemical plant belonging to Chandra Asri Group.

"The meeting is today. We are holding a meeting at BKPM to invite the relevant parties," said Kadin Indonesia Deputy Chairman Andi Yuslim Patawari.

Kadin Launches Investigation

Andi explained that Kadin Indonesia is conducting an investigation following reports of the extortion that surfaced on social media. He assured that the matter would be handled thoroughly.

"One of our concerns is the conflict in Cilegon, where people are acting in Kadin's name — we must resolve this. If we don't take action, we risk giving the impression that thuggery is more powerful," he said.

Investor Confidence Could Decline

He expressed regret over the practice of demanding project shares under Kadin Indonesia's name. According to him, such thuggery only serves to erode investor confidence.

"We deeply regret this. Investment trust and investors could be lost as a result. We must not let Vietnam and Thailand take advantage of this. Investors could easily flee abroad," he said.
