Bulog to Rent Additional Warehouses as Rice Stock Approaches 7 Million Tonnes
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Perum Bulog disclosed that the national rice stock stored in warehouses has reached 5.39 million tonnes. The abundant stock has compelled Bulog to rent additional warehouses to anticipate storage capacity up to 7 million tonnes.
Chief Executive Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani said the stock achievement is the result of the support from leadership, central and regional authorities, and farmers who have backed the government’s programme, namely national food security, in line with the guidance of President Prabowo Subianto to realise sustainable food self-sufficiency, “as directed by the President”. The remarks were made at a press conference in Jakarta on Friday (22 May 2026).
He noted that the stock achievement is a positive signal towards the national target of food self-sufficiency. “Alhamdulillah in 2025 we achieved food self-sufficiency with the projection that by May 2026 we have reached 5.39 million tonnes. Inshallah we can also achieve self-sufficiency in 2026,” he added.
However, the surge in rice stock means Bulog’s warehouse capacity, which is currently around 4 million tonnes, falls short. Accordingly, Bulog has already rented additional warehouses with a capacity of around 2 million tonnes. “Our current warehouses can hold about 4 million tonnes. Our stock is 5.39 million tonnes. We have already rented around 2 million tonnes. So we still have spare around 600,000 tonnes,” Rizal explained.
Moreover, Bulog is preparing to rent a further 1 million tonnes of warehouse capacity to anticipate stock rising to 6 million tonnes. “We are planning to rent about 1 million tonnes ahead of time to anticipate a possible increase to 6 million tonnes,” he said.
When asked whether this means Bulog is preparing warehousing capacity up to 7 million tonnes, Rizal confirmed: “Yes, we are preparing for 7 million tonnes.”
In addition, Bulog is planning to build 100 new warehousing sites across Indonesia, particularly in 3T areas (terluar, terdepan, and terpencil). “We are projecting ahead with the construction of 100 warehousing points across the country from Sabang to Merauke, prioritised for warehouses in 3T regions,” Rizal said.
He added that the new warehouses will also focus on districts and cities that do not yet have Bulog warehousing facilities, a move aimed at strengthening food reserves and accelerating logistics distribution to communities.
Meanwhile, regarding the target to absorb 6 million tonnes of rice, Rizal acknowledged the target may slip from the end of May to the end of June 2026.
