Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The President Director of Perum Bulog, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, has revealed the government’s major target to bolster the national rice reserves. In the future, Bulog is targeted to control up to 70% of the national rice stock to make price interventions and efforts to maintain food security more robust.

Rizal stated this in response to concerns about Bulog’s current stock portion, which is still considered small compared to the total national rice stock.

“That’s why we have been instructed by the President (Prabowo Subianto) to build warehouses, and agriculture will also be enhanced. We at Bulog will be expanded,” said Rizal when met at Bulog’s Head Office in Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026).

With the target for Bulog to control 70% of national rice, according to him, Indonesia can truly achieve food self-sufficiency, no longer dependent on imports.

“So the target is not just 50 percent, if necessary 70% in the future. This is our hope, so that what the President conveyed, food self-sufficiency, we truly achieve food self-sufficiency, no longer importing with extraordinary stock,” he said.

On the other hand, Rizal also targets Bulog’s rice stock to reach 6 million tonnes by the end of May 2026. As of 11 May 2026, the rice stock controlled by Bulog is said to have reached 5.3 million tonnes, exceeding the previous year’s record of 4.2 million tonnes.

Previously, the Minister of Agriculture and Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Amran Sulaiman revealed that the government’s rice reserve stock (CBP) as of 23 April 2026 had exceeded 5 million tonnes. With that figure, Bulog is said to control around 15% of the total national rice production.

“If our production is 34 million tonnes, (that means) 5 million tonnes (controlled by Bulog) is 15% (of national rice production),” said Amran in Karawang, West Java, on Thursday (23/4/2026).

According to Amran, this stock achievement marks a new milestone in the management of the government’s rice reserves (CBP).

The government is currently pushing to increase Bulog’s warehouse capacity and the absorption of farmers’ unmilled rice, as part of the targets for food self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on rice imports.
