BSN Strengthens ISPO Accreditation to Support National Palm Oil Competitiveness
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Standardization Agency (BSN), through the National Accreditation Committee (KAN), has issued the latest accreditation scheme to the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification body to support national palm oil competitiveness.
Acting Head of the National Standardization Agency (BSN) Y. Kristianto Widiwardono stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that this accreditation scheme covers the entire value chain of the palm oil industry, from the plantation sector and downstream industry to bioenergy businesses.
“This scheme is an important development because it integrates the application of standards comprehensively from upstream to downstream within a single accreditation framework, thereby enhancing consistency, credibility, and global recognition of certification results,” Kristianto said.
Furthermore, he conveyed that strengthening this system is expected to provide certainty for business actors in meeting international market demands, while encouraging more transparent, sustainable, and responsible business practices across the palm oil supply chain.
He assessed that this also addresses global market demands, including the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which poses a challenge for Indonesia.
The EUDR requires that every product, including palm oil, entering the global market, particularly the European Union, be proven free from deforestation after 2020.
This challenge, Kristianto continued, is crucial given that the palm oil industry is one of the backbones of the national economy, making a significant contribution to state foreign exchange while serving as a livelihood source for millions of farmers in various regions.
“Compliance with EUDR provisions requires a strong traceability system supported by accurate data. Accreditation is key to ensuring that certification results are trustworthy, both domestically and globally,” he stated.
Nevertheless, Kristianto emphasised that the EUDR also opens up significant opportunities for Indonesia to strengthen governance in the palm oil industry to be more transparent, accountable, and sustainable.
One of the main instruments relied upon is ISPO, as the national certification system that ensures palm oil business activities operate in accordance with principles of legality, sustainability, and good governance.
“Through Presidential Regulation Number 16 of 2025 on the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification System, the government has expanded the scope of ISPO from the upstream sector to downstream, including processing industries and bioenergy businesses,” Kristianto said.
The ISPO certification system is also strengthened through Minister of Agriculture Regulation Number 33 of 2025, which is a revision of the previous Minister of Agriculture Regulation for the plantation business sector, Minister of Industry Regulation Number 38 of 2025 for the downstream industry sector, and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 3 of 2026 for the bioenergy business sector.
