Salman Khan's bail plea rejected
Salman Khan's bail plea rejected
BOMBAY, India: Police filed formal charges of culpable
homicide Monday against Indian movie star Salman Khan, accusing
him of driving drunk, rashly and without a license when his car
swerved onto a sidewalk, killing one man and injuring three.
Magistrate Shayam Sisode rejected Khan's bail plea - the
fourth since his arrest two weeks ago.
Khan, who has played action heroes and romantic leads in 20
Hindi-language blockbuster movies, faces up to 10 years in prison
if he is convicted of culpable homicide for the Sept. 27
incident.
A District Court earlier ordered Khan to pay interim damages
to relatives of the dead and the injured. Judges in India have
the authority to grant such relief since court cases can take
years to settle.
Khan's attorneys have said he was not driving the car at the
time of the accident.
The actor is already fighting a case in which he was charged
with shooting a deer in a wildlife preserve in western India in
1998. He could face seven years in prison if convicted. -- AP
Dion celebrates 'A New Day'
LA LOUVIERE, Belgium: A New Day will be the theme and title of
Celine Dion's new show, set to debut March 25 at the new 4,000-
seat Colosseum theater at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
"It will be the beginning of a new adventure, of something
incredible," Dion said at rehearsals on Monday. "I can't wait
until the curtains rise. I'm so excited."
Producer-creator Franco Dragone said the show would include
song, dance, theater and special effects -- even clowns.
"The story will be Celine," he said. "Our tableau will be
built around her."
The show's cast of 60 dancers and performers have been
secretly rehearsing since June at a makeshift studio in the
mining town of La Louviere, Dragone's hometown, located 50
kilometers (30 miles) south of Brussels.
Dragone directed both of Cirque du Soleil's Las Vegas
productions, O and Mystere.
After taking a two-year break to have a baby, Dion, 34, is
planning 200 shows a year for three years in Las Vegas.
Dion said she is in full training to ready herself for the show.
Although she'll miss touring, the Canadian-born singer said
she'll have more time with her family.
"I'm having the best time of my life right now, it is really
amazing," she said. -- AP
