Bromo jeep crash site same as where South Korean tourist died last week
A deadly accident once again shook the Bromo tourist area on Friday (29 May). A Hardtop tourist jeep with number plate BG 1478 EF involved in a single-vehicle crash on the extreme route in Wonokitri Village, Tosari subdistrict, Pasuruan regency, resulting in two fatalities. The tragic incident drew sharp scrutiny as the crash site was precisely where a fatal accident occurred a week earlier, which claimed the life of South Korean tourist Hye Jin Kim. The location, known as the ‘Letter S’ bend, is a steep descent connecting Wonokitri Village to the Bromo Sea of Sand. Widian Dharma Singgih, chairman of the PasuruanHardtop Bromo Association, confirmed the similarity in location. He stated that the road is particularly hazardous for vehicles with brake system issues. ‘The accident occurred at the Letter S bend in Wonokitri Village, Tosari subdistrict, Pasuruan regency,’ said Widian Dharma Singgih on Friday (29 May). ‘Same location as the previous accident involving a Korean tourist.’ Pasuruan police chief AKBP Harto Agung Cahyono stated that the fatalities were the jeep driver identified as MS, a resident of Malang regency, and a Semarang tourist identified as YWA. Three other passengers, FR, ZH, and FNN, sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment at Sukapura community health centre. Based on the crime scene analysis, police strongly suspect brake failure or a malfunctioning brake system as the cause. The vehicle, travelling northbound, lost control while descending a steep slope, crashed into a cliff, and subsequently rolled over. Police and Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) management have urged jeep operators and independent tourists to regularly inspect vehicle roadworthiness. The Wonokitri-Tosari route is known for its steep terrain and sharp bends, requiring high concentration and proper brake condition.
