Broadcasting body selection begins

JAKARTA: At least 31 public figures will undergo screening by the House of Representatives (DPR) as candidates for nine seats on the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), according to a legislator.

Deputy chairman of House of Representatives Commission I for information and foreign affairs Effendy Choirie said on Tuesday that the screening would be conducted in the third week of June.

He refused to give details of the aspirants, but said that columnist Sinansari Ecip and lecturer Victor Menayang from the University of Indonesia were among the candidates.

The establishment of the KPI is recommended by Law No.32/2002 on broadcasting.

The Ministry of Communications and Information opened the registration on Feb. 3, 2003.

A total of 221 people applied for the post, which the ministry shortlisted to 31. --JP
