The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is continuing its efforts to legally commercialise alternative fuel oil (BBM) derived from processed plastic waste. BRIN provided assistance to a Community Self-Help Group (KSM) engaged in processing plastic waste into fuel in Yogyakarta on Friday, 12 June. BRIN, together with Pertamina, is currently mentoring the community group. The agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), is also studying whether the alternative fuel from waste processing can be sold legally. Head of BRIN’s Energy and Manufacturing Research Organisation, Cuk Supriyadi Ali Nandar, stated that BRIN has tested several fuel products from plastic waste processing to improve their quality according to standard parameters. “This is what we are currently discussing, the schemes whether Pertamina will later accommodate the crude oil or we process it so that the quality meets the fuel standards in Indonesia. This waste is of various kinds, with the same processing the output quality is certainly different. This is what we are thinking about, holding discussions with the ESDM and Pertamina for the absorption of products from plastic into oil,” he said. Meanwhile, for community groups that have already sold this alternative fuel product, Cuk Supriyadi emphasised that the sales are not conducted commercially, but rather on the basis of an agreement between the producer and consumer, with the quality accepted as is.
