The future of the palm oil industry lies not merely in crude palm oil production, but in downstream processing and the development of bioproducts.

Jakarta (ANTARA) — The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has established a partnership with PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara to strengthen research and innovation in developing the palm oil industry sustainably from upstream to downstream operations.

BRIN Head Arif Satria stated in Jakarta on Friday that this initiative is expected to enhance productivity, improve production efficiency, and promote downstream processing and product diversification based on palm oil.

“The future of the palm oil industry lies not in crude palm oil production alone, but in downstream processing and the development of high-value-added bioproducts,” he said.

Arif further noted that scientific and technological support is essential for Indonesia’s palm oil industry to continue developing competitively whilst remaining sustainable. He stated that research findings should not remain limited to academic publications but must be implemented to deliver tangible benefits for industry and national development.

“This is where research and innovation play a role in opening new opportunities for a more competitive and sustainable palm oil industry,” Arif remarked.

He added that strengthening the palm oil industry requires comprehensive efforts across the entire value chain, both through technological advancement in upstream operations and product innovation development in downstream sectors.

“Strengthening the palm oil industry requires comprehensive work from upstream to downstream. Upstream, we still face various challenges, including technology development and productivity improvements. Meanwhile, downstream presents significant opportunities for innovation development and bioproducts from palm oil,” he explained.

Through this partnership, BRIN and PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara will also establish a joint research centre and utilise each party’s research facilities to accelerate the development of science-based innovations for the palm oil industry.

“We see many innovation opportunities that can be developed to support Agrinas Palma Nusantara’s mission in boosting productivity and strengthening palm supply, whether for export needs, energy, or improving community welfare,” Arif said.

Meanwhile, PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara Deputy Chief Executive Officer Kusdi Sastro Kidjan emphasised the importance of strengthening dialogue and synergy between both parties to enhance national palm oil industry productivity.

“Through more discussion and synergy, we hope Indonesia can become the largest palm oil producer with high productivity levels,” he stated.
