New Delhi (ANTARA) - The foreign ministers of the BRICS countries have called for an increased role for women in international organisations and highlighted the fact that no woman has ever served as the United Nations Secretary-General, according to a statement released on Friday after the summit in New Delhi.

β€œIn the process of selecting the next UN Secretary-General, the ministers noted that only one citizen of Latin America and the Caribbean has ever held the position, and that no woman has ever been elected,” the statement said.

The top diplomats of BRICS also called for fair geographical representation in the UN Secretariat and other international organisations, as well as increased participation of women, especially from developing countries, at all levels of leadership.

BRICS is an intergovernmental group formed in 2006 by Russia, China, India and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011.

Five additional countries joined BRICS at the beginning of 2024, namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia.

Indonesia will then become the 11th member to join BRICS in 2025. This year, India holds the BRICS presidency.
