Breaking News! Rupiah Breaches Rp17,400 Against the US Dollar
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The rupiah’s exchange rate is increasingly under pressure against the US dollar on Tuesday’s trading (5/5/2026). The pressure on the Garuda currency is deepening after it opened weaker at the start of trading.
According to Refinitiv data, at 09:07 WIB, the rupiah was observed weakening by 0.22% to the level of Rp17,403/US.ThispositionindicatesadeeperweakeningcomparedtothemorningtradingopeningatRp17, 380/US.
With this movement, the rupiah has officially breached the psychological level of Rp17,400/US$, which also marks the new all-time intraday weakest level.
This pressure is also causing the rupiah to move further away from Monday’s (4/5/2026) closing position at Rp17,365/US$, which was previously the rupiah’s all-time weakest closing level.
The pressure on the rupiah is occurring amid the strengthening of the US dollar in the global market. The US dollar index (DXY) at 09:00 WIB was up 0.15% to 98.521.
The US dollar is strengthening in line with increasing demand for safe-haven assets, amid market concerns over the escalation of war in the Middle East. This situation keeps pressure high in the global financial markets.
The strengthening of the US dollar ultimately narrows the room for emerging market currencies to strengthen, including the rupiah.
