Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia’s trade balance recorded a surplus of US$960 million in January 2026. This surplus was lower than the previous month, December 2025, which saw a surplus of US$2.51 billion. This marks the 69th consecutive month of trade surplus since May 2021.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the surplus was driven by export performance reaching US$22.16 billion, whilst imports stood at only US$21.20 billion.

The surplus was lower compared to the figures recorded in January 2025. For context, at the end of last year, the trade balance also recorded a surplus of US$2.52 billion, exceeding the consensus estimate of US$2.45 billion.

The December 2025 surplus was accompanied by a sharp surge in export performance, which grew 11.64 per cent year-on-year (yoy) to reach US$26.35 billion, marking the fastest growth rate since February 2025.

Export growth at the end of last year reversed the 6.6 per cent contraction that occurred in November.

Nevertheless, on the import side, foreign purchases also recorded a sharp increase of 10.81 per cent with a value of US$23.83 billion, far exceeding market expectations which had projected a decline of 0.7 per cent.
