JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) records the Gender Inequality Index (GII) at 0.402 in 2025. The Gender Inequality Index (GII) is an indicator used to measure gender disparities across three dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and the labour market. BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti stated that a smaller GII value indicates lower inequality between men and women, or an improvement. “This means there is still inequality between men and women, but it is better than the previous year,” she said during the BPS release in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Amalia elaborated that several GII indicators show encouraging progress, including the indicator for births outside health facilities decreasing from 0.094 in 2024 to 0.077 in 2025. Additionally, the gender gap in the percentage of male and female legislators narrowed from 57.82 percent in 2020 to 55.44 percent in 2025. Furthermore, she noted that the Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR), sourced from the August National Labour Force Survey, rose from 56.42 in 2024 to 56.63 in 2025. Provinces in eastern Indonesia relatively have higher GII values, indicating greater gender inequality. “Papua Pegunungan is the province with the highest GII value (0.584), while DKI Jakarta has the lowest at 0.144,” she concluded.
