Denpasar, Bali — The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed that the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali throughout January 2026 declined compared to both December 2025 and January 2025.

“Foreign tourist arrivals in January 2026 were recorded at 502,205 visits, down from the previous month (December 2025) and also down compared to the same month of the previous year (January 2025),” stated Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, Head of BPS Bali, in Denpasar on Monday.

He noted that the number of arrivals was 12.30 per cent lower than December 2025, which recorded 572,668 visits.

The figure also declined 5.23 per cent from January 2025, which had 529,897 visits.

“However, this is actually normal — January is somewhat lower than December, but when compared to the same month of the previous year, January 2025, it has also declined by 5.23 per cent,” he said.

BPS also documented that visits from several major source countries to Bali similarly declined in early this year.

Foreign tourists from Australia remained the highest source country with 134,781 arrivals, declining 4.4 per cent compared to the previous month.

China ranked second with 45,896 arrivals, up 22.54 per cent, followed by India with 37,351 arrivals, or down 34.77 per cent, South Korea with 27,508 arrivals, or down 9.16 per cent, and Russia with 24,917 arrivals, or up 12.64 per cent.

When viewed by region, only tourists from the Middle East region experienced growth, whilst Asia, Oceania, Europe, ASEAN, America, and Africa declined.

“The Middle East is the only region experiencing an increase in arrivals, recording 7,123 visits or up 5.59 per cent,” said Agus Gede.

Beyond foreign tourists, BPS Bali data showed that domestic tourist visits also experienced decline, with a total of 2,170,938 trips to Bali.

“The number of domestic tourist trips, like foreign tourists, recorded a decline when compared to the previous month at 1.26 per cent and compared to the same month of the previous year at 6.09 per cent,” he said.

The decline in domestic tourist trips was predominantly driven by tourists from outside Bali visiting the island.

Meanwhile, when viewed by origin, all regions experienced declines in visitor numbers, including East Java, West Java, Jakarta, and Central Java.

This situation impacted hotel room occupancy rates (TPK), where starred hotel TPK stood at only 56.67 per cent, down 4.20 percentage points compared to December 2025 and down 3.61 percentage points compared to January 2025.

“In non-starred hotels, TPK also reached 32.7 per cent, a figure that similarly recorded a decline of 6.91 percentage points compared to December and down 2.92 percentage points compared to January 2025,” Agus Gede stated.
