Jakarta – Indonesia’s Deputy for Distribution Statistics and Services at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Ateng Hartono, stated that the food, beverages, and tobacco expenditure group contributed the largest monthly inflation (month-on-month/mtm) in February 2026.

On a monthly basis, Indonesia’s economy experienced inflation of 0.68 per cent mtm last month, following deflation of 0.15 per cent mtm in January 2026.

“The main contributor to February 2026 inflation on a month-on-month basis is the food, beverages, and tobacco group with an inflation contribution of 0.45 per cent,” Ateng said in Jakarta on Monday.

He noted that the expenditure group experienced inflation of 1.54 per cent mtm, with key commodities contributing to inflation being broiler chicken, bird’s eye chillies, fresh fish, red chillies, tomatoes, rice, and chicken eggs.

Additionally, the personal care and other services group also provided a substantial monthly inflation contribution in February 2026, at 0.19 per cent, with an inflation rate of 2.55 per cent mtm. The main contributing commodity was jewellery gold.

Meanwhile, based on component analysis, Ateng stated that the volatile food component experienced inflation of 2.50 per cent mtm and contributed 0.41 per cent to inflation. Key commodities from this component contributing to inflation included broiler chicken, bird’s eye chillies, and red chillies.

Inflation last month was also driven by the core component, which recorded monthly inflation of 0.42 per cent mtm with a contribution reaching 0.27 per cent. The main commodities driving the core component included jewellery gold, cooking oil, motorcars, and rice with side dishes.

Ateng also revealed that there was one expenditure group that experienced monthly deflation in February 2026, namely transportation at 0.11 per cent mtm with a deflation contribution of 0.01 per cent.

According to component analysis, the government-regulated price component also experienced deflation of 0.03 per cent mtm.

“In aggregate, this component does not provide a deflation contribution as it approaches 0 per cent. However, there is one commodity that predominantly contributes to deflation in government-regulated prices, namely petrol,” he said.
