BPS Records 150,875 Indonesians Moving Abroad Each Year, Outflow Exceeds Inflow
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has recorded an increase in the migration of the Indonesian population abroad in 2025. Data from the 2025 Inter-Census Population Survey shows an average of 150,875 Indonesian citizens moving abroad each year. BPS Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti explained that the international net migration is at a level of minus 0.53. “This means that in the period between the 2020 Long Form Population Census (LF SP 2020) and the 2025 Inter-Census Survey (SUPAS 2025), there was a reduction in population due to international migration averaging 53 people per 100,000 population each year,” she stated in a BPS release in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). This difference results in a net migration of minus 53 people per 100,000 population. Calculated from Indonesia’s total population of 284.67 million souls, the international migration figure reaches an average of 150,875 people per year. This number is the highest in recent periods. The 2020 LF SP recorded a net migration of only 11 people per 100,000 population. At that time, inbound migration was 43 people per 100,000 population, while outbound migration was 32 people per 100,000 population. The latest trend shows increasing outbound pressure. More Indonesian citizens are choosing to live abroad than those entering the country.
