The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) has mapped several of Indonesia’s major trading partners located along the Strait of Hormuz shipping lane. This action follows escalating tensions in the Middle East, which pose a potential threat to global logistics routes.

The Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that whilst the precise impact still requires further study, BPS has compiled a summary of Indonesia’s trade with Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates throughout 2025.

Ateng outlined several strategic commodities that could be affected should this shipping lane be disrupted:

Trade Relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

From exports totalling 4 billion US dollars, Indonesia primarily sends animal fats and vegetable oils (510.3 million US dollars) and vehicles (363.5 million US dollars). Conversely, Indonesia imports precious metals worth 511.1 million US dollars from the UAE.

Trade Relations with Oman

Imports from Oman are dominated by iron and steel (590.5 million US dollars). Meanwhile, Indonesia’s exports to Oman are predominantly animal fats and vegetable oils valued at 227.7 million US dollars.

Trade Relations with Iran

Indonesia primarily exports fruit (86.4 million US dollars) and vehicles (34.1 million US dollars) to Iran. Imports from Iran remain relatively modest at 8.4 million US dollars, dominated by fruit.

“To assess the potential impact if the conflict escalates, further analysis would certainly be required. We can only present some of the commodities mentioned,” said Ateng.

Tensions escalated after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was deployed to close the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, 28 February, in response to air strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory.

In retaliation for the attacks on Tehran, Iran also launched missiles at Israeli territory and targeted American military infrastructure in the region.
