BPS: Grain Production in January 2026 Rises 38.69 Per Cent
Jakarta — The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that production of milled dried grain (GKG) in January 2026 increased 38.69 per cent compared to January 2025.
Ateng Hartono, Deputy for Distribution and Services at BPS, stated that the production increase followed a rise in harvested area from 0.42 million hectares to 0.57 million hectares.
Nevertheless, BPS also reported that the harvested area for rice over the coming three months is likely to decline.
Based on BPS calculations, rice harvested area decreased by 0.16 million hectares to 3.92 million hectares during the February to April period, representing a 3.87 per cent decline compared to the same period in 2025.
The potential reduction in harvested area was accompanied by a fall in GKG production volume to 21.24 million tonnes, down 4.04 per cent compared to 2025.
Meanwhile, compared to January 2025, corn harvested area at the beginning of this year was recorded as up 11.17 per cent at 0.24 million hectares.
The increase in harvested area was also accompanied by growth in production of dried corn shelled at 14 per cent moisture content (JPK KA 14 per cent).
BPS noted that JPK KA 14 per cent in January 2026 reached 1.38 million tonnes, up 11.09 per cent compared to January 2025.
The Agriculture Ministry projects rice production will continue rising 15 per cent during March.
If this trend continues through the end of the month, the government estimates buffer stock reserves will reach 6 million tonnes.
“This has never happened throughout our independence period; if it remains consistent through year-end, the potential surplus is estimated to reach around 9 million tonnes,” said Amran on Monday.
