BPS: East Java's Population Growth Slows in the Last Five Years
Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) states that the results of the 2025 Inter-Census Population Survey (SUPAS) show a slowdown in the population growth rate in East Java over the last five years.
“There has been a slowdown in the population growth rate of 0.06 percentage points compared to the rate in the 2010-2020 period, which was 0.79%,” said Intermediate Expert Statistician of BPS East Java, Nurul Adriana, during a press conference in Surabaya on Tuesday.
The SUPAS 2025 records East Java’s population in 2025 at 42.11 million people, and since the 2010 Population Census was conducted, the number of people in East Java Province has continued to increase.
Comparing the results of SUPAS 2025 with the 2020 Population Census shows an addition of 1.445 million people with a growth rate of 0.73% per year over the last five years, namely 2020-2025.
This rate has slowed by 0.06 percentage points compared to the population growth rate in the 2010-2020 period, which was 0.79% per year.
Of the total population of East Java reaching 42.11 million people, the number of males is 20.988 million or 49.84%, while the number of females is 21.122 million or 50.16%.
By age group, the proportion of the working-age population (15-64 years) is 69.28%, or an increase compared to the 2010 Population Census result of 68.34%.
Conversely, the non-working-age population aged 0-14 years has decreased compared to the 2010 Population Census from 24.59% to 20.57%, while the age group of 65 years and above has increased from the 2010 Population Census, namely from 7.07% to 10.15%.
By generation, the millennial generation is the largest group with a percentage of 23.64%, followed by Generation Z at 22.69%, with the combination of these two young generations covering nearly half of the population in East Java Province.
“This shows the dominance of the productive generation in the current population structure,” said Nurul.
Contributions from the other four generations reach 53.67%, consisting of Generation X at 21.86%, Post-Generation Z at 17.18%, Baby Boomer Generation at 13.08%, and Pre-Boomer at 1.55%.
For the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in East Java, it is recorded at 1.95, down from the 2020 Population Census of 1.98, with Surabaya being the city with the lowest TFR of 1.70, while Sampang Regency has the highest TFR of 2.25.
This disparity reflects differences in social, cultural, economic characteristics, and access to reproductive health services across regions.
Meanwhile, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is 11.84 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, with Surabaya City having the lowest IMR of 9.95, while Bondowoso Regency has the highest at 16.74.
