BPKN urges public not to panic-buy fuel amid US–Israel–Iran conflict
BPKN has urged the public not to engage in ‘panic buying’ of fuel amid concerns over potential energy supply disruption stemming from the United States–Israel–Iran conflict. The agency emphasised that fuel consumers should remain calm and vigilant about global developments, but avoid excessive purchases. Panic buying has been reported in several regions, including Jember, Medan and Aceh, with people flocking to buy fuel after rumours of possible supply disruptions circulated.
Mufti Mubarok, chair of BPKN, said Indonesia has abundant energy resources and there is no need for excessive worry. ‘We have many energy sources. What needs to be done now is to improve energy efficiency, including efficiency in the use of transport,’ he said. He also stressed that the state must always ensure energy availability for the people.
BPKN also reminded public transport operators to prepare for a potential rise in passengers if people shift from private vehicles to public transport, noting that such a shift could reflect energy efficiency efforts. ‘Public transport operators must be prepared if there is a surge in users. There is a possibility of a shift from private to public transport,’ Mufti added.
In addition, BPKN urged Pertamina (Persero) to ensure smooth fuel distribution across all regions, especially ahead of the Lebaran travel period.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has stated that national energy stocks remain safe and that the government continues to monitor global developments that could affect energy supply. An energy analyst from Gadjah Mada University, Fahmy Radhi, echoed the view, warning that panic buying could disrupt distribution in practice. ‘If people buy excessively, the distribution that is actually sufficient could be disrupted,’ he said. Consequently, many parties hope the public remains calm and uses energy wisely to maintain national fuel supply stability.
