Jakarta (ANTARA) - BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is targeting micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) and workers in the digital economy as primary focuses for expanding participation in employment social security programmes. According to the President Director of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, Saiful Hidayat, these two sectors hold substantial potential, yet not all participants are currently covered by social protection initiatives. “We will intensify UMKM participation because in these micro UMKM there are still many areas that we can improve and develop,” he stated during a Hearing with Commission IX of the Indonesian House of Representatives at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday. In addition to UMKM, Saiful noted that the growth of workers in the digital sector and platform-based economy is steadily increasing, necessitating adequate social security protection. Accordingly, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan is also promoting expanded participation through digital ecosystems to reach workers in these sectors more effectively and efficiently. These steps are being taken, he explained, given the characteristics of UMKM and digital workers, who are predominantly in the informal sector and face higher levels of vulnerability. Furthermore, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan will strengthen outreach efforts by involving influential community figures to raise awareness among workers and encourage them to join as participants. These initiatives are expected to significantly increase the scope of social security protection, particularly for groups that have not been optimally reached thus far. “Of course, we will intensify outreach together with influential figures or community leaders, especially for participation in the informal sector,” he added. Previously, Saiful had stated that the organisation is pursuing the expansion of worker protection through the 3C strategy—coverage, care, and credibility—as a means to deliver more inclusive and sustainable employment social security.
