Jakarta — BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Indonesia’s Labour Social Security Institution) has symbolically handed over compensation totalling Rp1.7 billion to the heirs of victims of an ATR 42-500 aircraft crash operated by Indonesia Air Transport (IAT) that fell in the Bulusaraung Mountains region, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi recently.

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Chief Executive Saiful Hidayat conveyed profound condolences to the crew members affected by the tragedy. According to him, this tragic event is not only a loss for the bereaved families but also for all workers in Indonesia.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims. The loss of loved ones certainly leaves a deep wound. Through this compensation, the state wishes to ensure that the bereaved families continue to receive protection and support,” Saiful said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added that the provision of compensation is concrete evidence of the state’s presence in protecting workers, whilst ensuring that bereaved families continue to receive protection and benefits from the labour social security programme.

The ATR 42-500 aircraft crash operated by PT Indonesia Air Transport occurred on 17 January 2026 and garnered wide public attention. In the incident, ten people consisting of seven crew members and three passengers were declared dead.

Saiful explained that compensation to the victims’ heirs comprises benefits from the Work Accident Insurance (JKK), Old-Age Guarantee (JHT), Pension Insurance (JP), and educational scholarship benefits for participants’ children.

Labour social security protection not only provides support when risks occur but also ensures that bereaved families continue to have hope for continuing their lives.

Furthermore, Saiful emphasised that the provision of compensation is part of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan’s commitment to implementing the 3C strategy (Coverage, Care, and Credibility).

Through this moment, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan demonstrates the Care value through service filled with concern for participants and bereaved families, whilst demonstrating Credibility by ensuring that every participant’s rights are handed over in a timely, transparent, and accountable manner to entitled heirs.

“With labour social security protection, we hope that workers can work with greater peace of mind knowing that they and their families have a social safety net in case of unforeseen risks,” Saiful concluded.

He also expressed hope that the compensation provided, including scholarship benefits for the deceased’s children up to university level, can ease the burden of the bereaved family.

One family representative, Tri Adi, expressed gratitude for the assistance: “We are grateful and appreciate this activity. To be frank, if the company had to bear all this compensation itself it would certainly be very heavy. With BPJS Ketenagakerjaan we feel very helped, especially with the scholarship for the deceased’s children so it can become support for the future of the bereaved family.”
