BPJS Kesehatan has reminded prospective Hajj pilgrims to ensure their participation in the National Health Insurance programme (JKN) remains active. According to BPJS Kesehatan Public Relations Head Rizzky Anugerah, it would be better if this status is confirmed before they depart for Saudi Arabia, so access to health services during the Hajj process can be better secured.

Particularly for calhaj with health risk factors, both before departure and after returning to the homeland, active JKN participation remains important to guarantee funding for health services if needed.

“Some cases, there are pilgrims who become ill on returning from the Holy Land and are forced to pay hospital bills out of their own pockets because they are not JKN participants or their JKN status is not active,” said Rizzky Anugerah in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday (22/5/2026).

He said active JKN participation also supports smooth administration for departure in accordance with the Minister of Hajj and Umrah Decree No. 31 of 2025. This regulation encourages pilgrims, including special Hajj pilgrims, to have active health insurance.

According to Rizzky, calhaj can access health services at all health facilities that cooperate with BPJS Kesehatan. This includes primary health facilities, such as Puskesmas, klinik pratama, and independent medical practitioners, as well as hospitals.

Moreover, the portability principle in the JKN Programme allows pilgrims to obtain health services while at embarkation dormitories across Indonesia according to their placement location.

Rizzky urged calhaj not to delay registration or checking the status of their JKN membership. Registration can be done via the Pandawa service on WhatsApp (WA) or the Mobile JKN app.

For participants whose JKN status is not active due to unpaid contributions, he said the status can be reactivated by settling the arrears or by joining the Rehab Programme consisting of instalment payments.

He added that calhaj who are already JKN participants can also carry out self-health history screening via the Mobile JKN app.

“Besides protecting pilgrims, the JKN Programme also provides peace of mind because families at home still have access to health services. So pilgrims can focus on worship,” he said.

Rizzky said the JKN Programme also carries the spirit of mutual aid because participants’ contributions help other participants who need health services.

According to him, maintaining active JKN participation also aligns with istitha’ah—the physical and financial ability to perform the Hajj.

“For those who have been able to undertake the Hajj, God willing they are also able to maintain an active JKN membership. This is part of our effort and our shared concern,” he said.
