The Indonesian Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) continues to strengthen the quality of halal certification services. One such effort has been undertaken through enhancing the competency of halal auditors via the Halal Auditor Quality Improvement programme held in Depok, West Java, on Monday 9 March 2026.

The activity was attended by 80 halal auditors from 38 Halal Inspection Institutions (LPH) from various regions across Java.

The programme is intended to ensure that halal verification processes are conducted professionally, accurately, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

BPJPH Head Ahmad Haikal Hasan, who opened the activity remotely, emphasised that the role of halal auditors has become increasingly strategic as the global halal economy develops. “Halal is no longer viewed merely as an issue of compliance with Sharia principles, but has evolved into a global quality standard, a symbol of consumer trust, and a competitive resource in the global economy,” he stated.

According to him, halal auditors have a responsibility to conduct inspections carefully, objectively, and in accordance with standards established in the implementation of the Halal Product Assurance (JPH) scheme.

Haikal also stressed that the competency of halal auditors must be continuously strengthened, both in terms of understanding regulations, technical capability in tracing materials and production processes, and integrity in conducting inspections.

With this enhanced competency, halal audit processes are expected to run more accurately, transparently, and accountably, thereby maintaining public trust whilst supporting the strengthening of the national halal ecosystem.

This effort is also an important component in preparing for the implementation of mandatory halal certification in October 2026.

Deputy Head for Halal Product Assurance Supervision and Guidance EA Chuzaemi Abidin explained that the activity aimed to improve the competency, professionalism, and integrity of halal auditors in conducting halal product verification.

With strong competency, each stage of the verification process is expected to proceed according to standards, thereby ensuring the halal status of products circulating in society.

The activity covered various technical aspects of halal product verification, including updates to Halal Product Assurance regulations, procedures for inspecting materials and halal production processes, and identification of critical halal points in the production process.

Participants were also equipped with understanding of halal and haram concepts in establishing product halal status and implementation of the Halal Product Assurance System (SJPH).

On a separate occasion, BPJPH Secretary-General Muhammad Aqil Irham emphasised the importance of expanding the presence of Halal Inspection Institutions so that halal certification services can be more easily implemented by businesses.

“I still remember when there were only three LPHs. Now the number has grown to 42 Main LPHs and 80 Primary LPHs. Going forward, LPHs need to be distributed more evenly so that the service ratio is proportional to the number of businesses,” he stated.

Aqil believes that adequate availability of LPHs will accelerate halal verification processes whilst making halal certification services more efficient and affordable.
