BPBD South Jakarta has evacuated a 14-year-old boy who drowned at TB Simatupang
Jakarta — The South Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has evacuated a 14-year-old boy who drowned at the Saringan Sampah TB Simatupang in Tanjung Barat, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, on Tuesday 19 May.
According to Muhammad Nur, Commander of the South Jakarta BPBD Platoon, in Jakarta on Wednesday, the incident began when the victim, aged 14, sank in Kali Ciliwung while attempting to retrieve a fishing line that had become snagged.
‘The incident occurred on Sunday (17 May). The victim and a friend were fishing. The victim’s line became snagged and when he tried to retrieve it, the current was too strong, and he was carried away and could not be rescued,’ he said.
After evacuation and being pronounced dead, the male victim was transported by ambulance from PMI Jakarta Selatan to hospital.
‘The search operation has concluded. We urge residents who wish to engage in activities along river or canal banks to remain vigilant so as not to have further incidents,’ he said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of PMI Jakarta Selatan, Mundari, added that in evacuating the victim, they deployed one ambulance and two personnel.
The body is currently undergoing identification by the Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) for further investigation and is planned to be taken to the family home.
‘We extend our condolences to the family. May the victim rest in peace and may those left behind be granted fortitude,’ he said.
