BATAM — the Batam Authority (BP Batam) moved swiftly in response to a fire that broke out at the Kabil Industrial Waste Processing Zone (KPLI) on Tuesday evening, 23 June 2025, at approximately 19:50 WIB.

Deputy for General Services at BP Batam, Ariastuty Sirait, went directly to the scene to ensure that the firefighting response was rapid and effective.

"We are grateful there were no casualties in this incident. That is the most important thing," said Ariastuty at the location.

The fire occurred in a building belonging to PT Desa Air Kargo Batam, which was known to store various waste materials including used rags, wastewater treatment plant sludge (sludge WWTP), rockwool, glycerine sludge, and residual blasting process materials.

A joint team comprising BP Batam's Fire Brigade, the Batam City Government, and police units moved quickly to the scene and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other areas. A total of 32 other tenants in the zone were saved from potential danger.

"We greatly appreciate the rapid response from all parties. This demonstrates the level of preparedness that we must continue to maintain and improve," added Ariastuty.

BP Batam has also instructed the warehouse operator to immediately conduct an evaluation of the security systems and waste management practices in place at the facility.

Furthermore, Ariastuty affirmed that BP Batam would continue to monitor the investigation into the cause of the fire and strengthen coordination with all relevant parties to prevent similar incidents in the future.

"This incident serves as an important reminder that safety and waste management must not be neglected. We hope that incidents like this will not recur," she concluded.
