Botabek expected to support Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): West Java Governor R. Nuriana expressed hope on Monday that Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi (Botabek) would be appointed supporting regions in Jakarta's efforts to become a service city.

"That will give equal treatment to both (Jakarta and Botabek) areas," said Nuriana.

The three regencies, known as Botabek, outline the suburbs of South, West and East Jakarta respectively.

"Bekasi and Tangerang provide Jakarta with housing complexes and industrial estates. They also provide water sources for the city," Nuriana was quoted by Antara as saying.

"Bogor, on the other hand, serves as a water catchment area for Jakarta. It provides the city with residential complexes and agricultural areas," Nuriana said.

Nuriana was making a speech at a ceremony held in Bekasi where the Jakarta city administration, represented by Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, symbolically delivered ten projects it financed and completed within the three regencies.

The ten projects included five road improvement projects, the greening of severely eroded land, the construction of two senior high school buildings and a multipurpose building.

In response to Nuriana's speech, Surjadi said that from the viewpoint of regional planning, the planning of Jakarta could not be separated from that of Botabek.

"This is clear from the plan to develop the Jakarta-Bogor- Tangerang-Bekasi (Jabotabek) mass rapid transport system and other spatial planning," Surjadi added.

"Jakarta is inseparable from Botabek and vice versa. Dramatically speaking, the two need each other, long for each other and nurture each other," said the Jakarta governor.

On the occasion, Nuriana asked the city administration to warn Jakartans who move residences to Botabek areas to also change their Jakarta ID cards with those of their respective Botabek areas.

Earlier last Saturday in Bandung Nuriana and Surjadi signed a joint regulation on the organization, structure and job description of the Jabotabek Development Cooperating Agency (BKSP). (arf)
