Pertamina continues to strengthen strategic steps based on global collaboration to drive an increase in national oil and gas (migas) production. This is reflected in the meeting between Pertamina’s Deputy Director, Oki Muraza, and the Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, Jennifer L. Miskimins.

The meeting carried the main theme of “Collaboration for Supporting the Production Increase”, with a focus on strengthening education and research as the foundation for boosting migas production, particularly from non-conventional resources (unconventional oil & gas).

Both parties discussed opportunities for strategic cooperation that include joint research on complex reservoirs, the development of technology for exploiting non-conventional migas, and enhancing human resource capacity through advanced education programmes and academic exchanges.

This approach is seen as important to address the challenges of declining production from conventional migas fields that have entered the mature phase.

Oki Muraza emphasised that the company is implementing various efforts to increase national migas production.

“Currently, Pertamina is focusing on developing existing fields while also promoting the development of non-conventional reservoirs. To this end, we continue to strengthen our capabilities, knowledge, and mastery of technology to support sustainable production optimisation,” he stated in a comment on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

From an academic perspective, the Colorado School of Mines is known as one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of energy and petroleum engineering, with strengths in developing technology and research on unconventional resources, including shale oil, tight oil, and oil shale.

Experience in developing low-permeability reservoirs and mastery of technologies such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling make Mines a strategic partner in supporting the transformation of Indonesia’s upstream migas industry.

Jennifer L. Miskimins conveyed that her side welcomes this collaboration opportunity positively and is ready to provide support according to the expertise they possess, particularly in technology development and scientific approaches for unconventional oil & gas.

The discussions also covered opportunities for trilateral collaboration involving Universitas Pertamina as part of strengthening the national education and research ecosystem.

This cooperation is directed towards developing joint education programmes, establishing a non-conventional migas research centre in Indonesia, and strengthening industry-needs-based curricula.

This step is considered strategic in building technological independence while ensuring the sustainability of human resource development in the energy sector. The integration of industry and academia is expected to accelerate more effective technology transfer.

As part of its long-term strategy, Pertamina continues to promote the development of non-conventional migas to offset the natural decline in production from conventional fields.

Resources such as shale oil, tight oil, and coal bed methane are assessed to have significant potential, although they require more complex technological and engineering approaches.

Through structured global collaboration based on research, Pertamina reaffirms its commitment to accelerating the increase in national migas production while strengthening Indonesia’s energy resilience amid the dynamics of the global energy transition.

As a leading company in the energy transition field, Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission target by 2060 and continues to promote programmes that directly impact the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

All these efforts align with Pertamina’s transformation oriented towards governance, public service, business sustainability, and the environment, by applying Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all business lines and operations.
