Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reminded every head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) executor to be prepared to directly engage at impacted locations to assist communities and local governments during emergencies.

“This means that even as officials, when a disaster occurs, they must go to the disaster site. Accompanying the community and supporting the local government,” said BNPB Chief Suharyanto in his statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Suharyanto conveyed this at the opening of the third wave of Senior Disaster Management Training (SDMT), attended by 68 BPBD executor heads (Kalaksa) at the provincial, district, and city levels, held at the Disaster Management Training Centre in Bogor Regency, West Java.

On that occasion, he exemplified the disaster handling approach taken by central BNPB officials in managing hydrometeorological disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. According to him, BPBD leaders must be at the forefront in helping residents in their respective areas.

“Learn from past disaster handling experiences. For the Kalaksa, share experiences with colleagues; we are all comrades in arms in disaster management,” Suharyanto added.

Through this SDMT training, the BPBD executor heads are expected to exchange experiences and lessons on crisis management. The training, taking place from 4 to 16 May 2026, emphasises case studies from previous disasters.

Over the next 12 days, participants will be equipped with materials ranging from crisis leadership, disaster information and communication management, logistics management, rehabilitation and reconstruction, to command post simulation exercises.

The Head of BPBD Bengkayang Regency, Dwi Berta Meiliana, assessed that this training is important because a leader must understand the proper procedures for disaster management to ensure services to the community are more targeted and maximal. She hopes this activity will help her in formulating more effective disaster handling plans in her region.

“So that services to the community in disaster management are even better and the community receives greater benefits, because a BPBD leader must know the targeted disaster management procedures,” said Dwi.
