Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has stated that the impact of extreme weather comprising heavy rainfall and strong winds that struck Binjai City, North Sumatra Province, from Friday (27 February) has expanded to encompass five districts.

Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB’s Centre for Disaster Data, Information and Communication, in Jakarta on Sunday, explained that according to the latest reports, the affected areas include Binjai Kota District in Kampung Binjai and Tangsi Villages, Binjai Timur District in Dataran Tinggi, Timbang Langkat and Mencirim Villages, and Binjai Selatan District in Rambung Barat and Rambung Dalam Villages.

Additionally, extreme weather has also affected Binjai Utara District in Cengkeh Turi Village and Binjai Barat District in Limau Sundai Village.

BNPB confirmed that at least 22 households have been affected and are currently receiving support from joint response teams that were deployed shortly after the disaster information was received.

In terms of material damage, according to Abdul, 22 residential units have been impacted, comprising three units with severe damage, 13 units with moderate damage, and six units with minor damage, with one place of worship also reported as affected.

“Damage assessments are continuing to be conducted to determine the needs for handling and assistance for affected residents,” he said.

Abdul assured that BPBD Binjai City personnel together with the local Health Office are preparing health services and medical assistance, as well as monitoring weather forecasts and early warnings from the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) to anticipate potential further extreme weather events.
