BMKG Warns of Up to 4-Metre Waves Until 2 June 2026
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for maritime users regarding potential 4-metre high waves in several Indonesian waters, posing significant risks to national shipping safety until 2 June 2026. BMKG Maritime Meteorology Director Eko Prasetyo has urged all maritime transport operators, captains, and traditional fishermen to adhere to safe operational limits. Extra vigilance is required due to strong winds causing increased wave heights. ‘Elevated wave heights in certain areas pose risks to maritime safety. Therefore, BMKG advises the public, particularly fishermen using maritime transport, to remain vigilant,’ Eko stated in a press release from Jakarta on Saturday (30 May). BMKG details safety risk parameters for different maritime vessel types: North Natuna Sea, northern Strait of Malacca, and western Aceh Indian Ocean. These conditions are caused by winds reaching 25 knots. In addition to high-risk areas, BMKG has identified regions with moderate waves (1.25 to 2.5 metres). Coastal communities near potential high-wave areas are advised to stay alert. BMKG recommends monitoring official maritime weather updates to minimise the risk of maritime accidents.
