Mataram — Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has warned the public to prepare for potential tidal flooding that could inundate coastal areas of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) during the period 17-27 March 2026, coinciding with the Eid holiday.

Satria Topan Primadi, head of the Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (ZAM) Meteorology Station, stated that tidal flooding is caused by the phenomenon of maximum high tides connected to the new moon phase.

“Maximum sea level rise is approximately 1.9 metres in several waters of NTB, with high tides occurring from daytime through early morning,” he said in Mataram on Tuesday.

Satria noted that tidal flooding has the potential to cause seawater inundation in several coastal areas, particularly regions with low elevation.

The coastal areas on Sumbawa Island likely to be affected by seawater inundation include Labuhan Badas, Palibelo, Woha, Bolo, Langgudu, Soromandi, Sape, Rasanae Barat, Hu’u, and Asakota.

“We urge coastal communities in areas at risk of tidal flooding to remain vigilant,” said Satria.

He further noted that the tidal flooding warning is significant given that West Nusa Tenggara is an island province comprising Lombok Island and Sumbawa Island, plus 401 smaller islands in the surrounding area.

“Continually monitor updates on weather conditions and ocean wave information through BMKG’s official channels to anticipate potential impacts from tidal flooding phenomena,” he said.
