BMKG urges DIY residents to watch for extreme weather as Invest 90S cyclone develops in the Indian Ocean
Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has urged the public to beware of potential extreme weather, including moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) due to the influence of the cyclone disturbance Invest 90S in the Indian Ocean. Sandy Purba Almubarak, Acting Head of the Yogyakarta Meteorological Station, told reporters in Yogyakarta on Thursday that the cyclone disturbance is forecast to remain active until 8 March 2026. According to BMKG’s forecast, over the next 24 hours the intensity of the Invest 90S cyclone is expected to begin to decrease, signalled by wind speeds of around 35 knots or 65 kilometres per hour and air pressure rising to 998 hPa. “Next, over the next 48 hours the cyclone is expected to continue weakening with wind speeds around 30 knots or 55 kilometres per hour, and over the next 72 hours it is expected to dissipate,” he said. Sandy noted that the atmosphere’s dynamic analysis also shows sea surface temperatures in the Java Sea and the southern Indian Ocean near Java to be relatively warm, ranging from 26 to 29 degrees Celsius, which supports increased moisture supply to the atmosphere. In addition, the vertical humidity profile in the DIY region at heights of 1.0 to 3.0 kilometres, i.e., the 850-700 millibar layer, registered between 60 and 95 percent, thus sufficiently affecting the likelihood of cloud development in the area. On 5 March 2026, moderate to heavy rain is potentially expected in Kulon Progo, southern Gunungkidul, and southern Bantul, with sea waves still ranging from 2.5 to 4.0 metres. Meanwhile, on 6 March 2026, light to moderate rain is forecast in northern Sleman, northern Kulon Progo, and northern Gunungkidul, with sea wave heights remaining in the 2.5 to 4.0 metre range.
