BMKG: Tidal Flooding Potentially Threatens North Sulawesi Coastal Areas
Manado (ANTARA) — The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Maritime Station in Bitung has forecast that tidal flooding potentially threatens a number of coastal areas in North Sulawesi.
"The new moon phase on 17 February 2026 has the potential to increase maximum sea water levels. Based on water level monitoring data and tidal predictions, tidal flooding may occur in several coastal areas of North Sulawesi," said Head of the Class II Maritime Meteorological Station in Bitung, Aqil Ihsan, in Manado on Wednesday.
The potential tidal flooding is generally expected to affect community activities around ports and coastal areas, including loading and unloading operations at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt ponds and inland fisheries.
"The public is urged to remain vigilant and prepared to anticipate the impact of maximum sea tides, and to pay attention to updated maritime weather information from BMKG," he said.
Tidal flooding is forecast to occur from 15 February to 24 February 2026.
The areas at risk of tidal flooding include the coast of Talaud Islands Regency (16–22 February 2026), the coast of Sangihe Islands Regency (15–24 February 2026), and the coast of Sitaro Islands Regency (16–22 February 2026).
