Jakarta — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecasted that several regions across Indonesia face a potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the influence of the remnants of tropical cyclone Nuri and other atmospheric activity in the regional zone.

BMKG forecaster Nazmi, speaking during an online broadcast in Jakarta on Friday, stated that the remnants of tropical cyclone Nuri were observed in the northern Pacific Ocean north of Papua with maximum wind speeds of approximately 25 knots and minimum air pressure of 1,003 hectopascals.

The system is reported to be moving towards the east to northeast, and over the next 48 to 72 hours is forecast to have wind speeds ranging between 20-25 knots with minimum pressure of approximately 1,002 hectopascals.

The presence of tropical cyclone remnants Nuri, according to Nazmi, is inducing the formation of convergence and confluence zones in the northern Pacific Ocean north of Papua, which is increasing the potential for rainfall cloud development in surrounding areas.

These conditions have triggered the formation of convergence and confluence zones in the ocean south of Timor Island, which is also increasing the potential for rainfall cloud formation in eastern Indonesia.

BMKG forecasts that heavy to very heavy rainfall potential may occur in North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and the Highlands of Papua.

A number of major cities are forecasted to experience rainfall of varying intensity, including thunderstorms in Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, and Manado.

Light rainfall is forecasted to occur in several cities, including Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Denpasar, Mataram, Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, and Jayapura, whilst cloudy conditions are forecasted for Serang, Jakarta, and Pontianak with hazy air conditions expected in Bandung.
