BMKG Reveals 29 Active Fault Segments in West Java, Identifies 4 Major Fault Lines
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Bandung has stated that there are 29 active fault segment points within the West Java region. The primary fault lines include the Lembang Fault, Garsela Fault, Cipamingkis Fault, and Cimandiri Fault.
Based on 2024 data from the National Earthquake Study Centre (Pusgen) under the Ministry of Public Works, the 29 fault segments in West Java consist of: Cimandiri-Citatah, Cimandiri-Cisokan, Cimandiri-Cimandiri, Cimandiri-Nyalindung-Cibeber, Lembang-Lembang, Cileunyi-Tanjungsari, and Cicalengka-Cicalengka.
Other identified segments include Cianjur-Cianjur 1, Cianjur-Cianjur 2, Cipamingkis-Cipamingkis, Garsela-Kendang, Garsela-Kencana, Tampomas, Karangmanggu, and Ciremai. Additionally, the list includes the Java Back Arc Thrust Depok, Rarata, Salak, Citarum Front, Citarum, Cariu, and Klapanunggal.
Further segments include the Java Back Arc Thrust Cirata, Tangkuban Parahu, Cipunegara, Java Back Arc Thrust Tampomas, Baribis, Ciremai, and Cisanggarung.
“There are 29 fault segments in West Java, with the main ones being Cimandiri, Lembang, Garsela, and Cipamingkis,” said the Head of BMKG Bandung, Suaidi Ahadi, when contacted on Monday (21/09/2026).
He noted that all of these fault segments are active. Given that West Java is situated within a fault zone, BMKG is reminding the public to understand earthquake disaster mitigation measures from an early stage.
