BMKG predicts rain to drench Bintan Island for up to a week ahead
Tanjungpinang (ANTARA) — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Tanjungpinang has predicted that rain will continue to fall across Bintan Island in Riau Islands Province (Kepri) for up to a week ahead.
BMKG Tanjungpinang forecaster Fadris said light to moderate rainfall began drenching Bintan Island at the start of February 2026, after a dry spell that had persisted since December 2025.
"Rainfall is expected to continue for the next week to ten days, though not every day — for example, one day of rain followed by one dry day," Fadris said in Tanjungpinang on Wednesday.
According to Fadris, the rainfall at the start of Ramadhan is driven by Bintan Island's geographical position near the equator, which gives it a tropical climate with high rainfall throughout the year.
"Unlike other regions in Indonesia generally, Bintan Island experiences more rainy days," he said.
Regarding wind and sea wave conditions, Fadris noted that waves in the southern waters — including around Tanjungpinang, Bintan, Batam, Lingga and Karimun — remain relatively low, with wave heights of 0.5 to 1.2 metres.
However, he warned that the northern waters, covering Natuna and Anambas, require vigilance, with moderate-category wave heights reaching 1.25 to 2.5 metres.
"All shipping activities should be wary of wave conditions in the Natuna and Anambas waters, as they are quite high," Fadris said.
BMKG has urged the public to exercise greater caution when undertaking outdoor activities during the rainy season at the start of Ramadhan 2026, particularly motorcyclists and car drivers who should be alert to slippery road conditions and reduced visibility.
The public has also been advised to watch for potential flooding, landslides and fallen trees resulting from rain accompanied by wind in the coming days.
"Continue to monitor the latest weather information from BMKG through official channels to anticipate any untoward incidents," Fadris said.
