Jakarta, Indonesia — The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded air temperatures in Jakarta reaching 35.6 degrees Celsius in recent days, with ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure levels classified as hazardous.

Guswanto, Deputy Head of BMKG’s Meteorology Division, stated that these conditions are triggered by minimal cloud cover, allowing solar radiation to reach the earth’s surface optimally.

“BMKG has recorded maximum temperatures of up to 35.6 degrees Celsius and UV index in the purple category or extreme danger level,” said Guswanto when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (17 March 2026).

Clear skies with sparse clouds have caused sunlight to penetrate the atmosphere with minimal obstruction. The situation is further exacerbated by UV indices in the purple category, indicating that sun exposure levels pose a significant health risk, particularly during midday hours.

“This phenomenon is common annually during seasonal transition periods. It is estimated to continue for several more days as long as skies remain clear and cloud cover remains low,” explained Guswanto.

BMKG has urged the public to restrict outdoor activities during certain times to avoid direct sun exposure risks. Residents are advised to avoid sun exposure, particularly between 10:00 and 14:00 local time.

Additionally, the public is encouraged to use protective equipment such as hats, umbrellas, sunglasses and long-sleeved clothing when engaging in outdoor activities.
