The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of potential extreme weather across several Indonesian regions from June 1 to 4, 2026, urging the public to remain vigilant against hydro-meteorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and strong winds.

Recent atmospheric analysis indicates that rainfall across the country remains light to heavy, driven by persistent moisture in the atmosphere despite some areas transitioning into the dry season.

The BMKG has placed Papua Highlands under ‘Siaga’ alert due to forecasted heavy to very heavy rain, which poses a high risk of flooding and landslides.

The agency advises drivers to exercise caution on roads, as heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reduces visibility and increases the risk of accidents from slippery surfaces or fallen trees.

BMKG stressed that the onset of the dry season does not mean rain will cease entirely.

“The dynamic weather conditions require careful planning for various activities, particularly land, sea, and air travel, as well as outdoor pursuits such as sports and tourism,” the agency stated in its official release.

Local governments are urged to implement early mitigation measures, including ensuring proper drainage and trimming hazardous branches to minimise the impact of extreme weather in early June.
