BMKG Issues Early Warning for Maximum Sea Level Rise in Bali's Coastal Areas
The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency’s (BMKG) Region III office has issued an early warning for potential maximum sea level increases across several Bali coastal regions. The predicted tidal surge is forecast to occur over the coming week, from Monday 2 March to Monday 9 March 2026.
“The occurrence of the Perigee phase on 25 February and the full moon on 3 March 2026 has the potential to increase maximum sea level heights in several Bali coastal areas,” said Cahyo Nugroho, Head of the BMKG Region III office, in a statement issued on Sunday 1 March.
The coastal areas at risk of experiencing this tidal surge include the southern coast of Tabanan Regency, Badung Regency, Denpasar City, Gianyar Regency, and the southern coast of Klungkung Regency.
“The potential for coastal flooding (rob) will vary in timing by day and hour across each region, generally affecting community activities around ports and coastal areas, including port cargo operations, activities in coastal settlements, salt farming and fish ponds,” he explained.
Regarding the potential for maximum sea level rise, the public has been urged to remain vigilant and prepared to anticipate its impacts whilst monitoring the latest maritime weather information from BMKG Region III.
BMKG data from the past 16 years (2010–2025) also shows an increasing trend in flooding and landslide incidents in line with rising temperatures and climate change. High waves are expected to continue towards the Indian Ocean south of Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
